March Madness Opening Weekend 2018:

The NCAA tournament opening weekend is the third week in March, March 13th-14th. In UD Arena, in Dayton, Ohio the 64th and 65th teams will go head to head to enter the traditional 64 team tournament at the bottom 16th seed. (will face the overall #1 seed)

On the verge of expanding the Mens College Basketball tournament to 68 teams, we look back and wonder, when did it become 64 teams and when did the NCAA tournament start having 65 teams?

A Little NCAA Tournament History:
1939–1950: 8 teams
1951–1952: 16 teams
1953–1974: varied between 22 and 25 teams
1975–1978: 32 teams
1979: 40 teams
1980–1982: 48 teams
1983: 52 teams (four play-in games pre-tournament)
1984: 53 teams (five play-in games pretournament)
1985–2000: 64 teams
2001–2010: 65 teams
2011–present: 68 teams (four play-in games in round 1, all teams play in the second round)
